Tracing Moments

Finally uploaded my paper on aspects of the making of my artwork +-now to Leonardo Transactions today.

It uses a lot of material from the artist talk I gave at the Beta_space opening last year, as well as additional material.

A pdf of the file will likely be available on the website very soon.

Joseph’s first drawing

13 months to the day

Stole a Derwent blue grey and some paper away

Next thing he’s quiet as a mouse drawing on the floor of the house!

Makin’ his mamma proud! Not once did he put the pencil in his mouth

He was making marks. Like with music, chances are he’ll love art.

Bec’s 3 minute sponge

I used this recipe for Joe’s birthday cakes & cupcakes and they turned out very well. And its sooo easy!

1 large cup flour

1 small cup sugar

3 eggs (yummier with larger eggs)

85g melted butter

3 Tablespoons milk

2 Teaspoons baking powder

Beat all the ingredients except for the baking powder together for 3 minutes. Then add the baking powder and beat well. Bake in 2 greased small tins 10-15 mins 160 or 180 if you have a cool oven. Well, I usually use just the one large round tin, about 30mins. Bec sometimes puts Berries or Apples & Pears with Cinnamon sugar on top before baking. For Joe’s birthday cake I did a cream cheese, icing sugar & lemon juice icing that was pretty good.

Art therapy, conversation with Y partII

3. We also spoke about art therapy.

Y: It is a fallacy and insulting to the art discipline. When emotional, one cannot practice art, cannot think clearly to make informed decisions.Making art to deal with issues is like doing something as a pre-schooler.

Me: I agree. Maybe art therapy is a clouded issue because when you make art you are often in a meditative state, a state of single minded focus (at least I am). But this meditative state is a by-product of making the art, not an objective.

Y: And when emotional you also can’t concentrate to learn new techniques. To help someone with problems using art you have to give them something they already know how to do, because they can’t concentrate.

Me: Maybe art therapy works because learning the process is a distraction, and the distraction itself is what enables some healing to take place. But then this is different to art helping the healing to take place – any distraction will do.

Open in art, nature and emergence

My paper has been accepted for Ozchi2009. I’ve also been accepted into the Ozchi Doctoral Consortium.

Open in art, nature and emergence

ABSTRACT

The interactive art system +-now is modelled on the openness of the natural world. Emergent shapes constitute a novel method for facilitating this openness. With the art system as an example, the relationship between openness and emergence is discussed. Lastly, artist reflections from the creation of the work are presented. These describe the nature of open systems and how they may be created.

home made laundry soap

I’m washing a lot these days.. and with greywater & septic tank output its a concern for the garden. Even though we use the ‘green’ and ‘earth’ products, for general laundry I’m looking to maybe mixing our own laundry soap. Certainly some white vinegar is better to mixed softeners for the final rinse…

Here’s a recipe I’ll try soon as I can get some pure soap – preferably flakes or already grated! Its from Margaret.
1. WATER, PREFERABLY RAINWATER
2. PURE SOAP, (If you can, avoid soaps made from Palm Oil. Toilet soaps usually have a lower Ph. than laundry soap, and there are many unscented or naturally scented varieties available.)
3. For a wetting agent use HOUSEHOLD AMMONIA** or BICARB.SODA PLEASE DO NOT USE BORAX – Here’s Why? Wetting agent may be optional.

** Note**Unlike soap & soda, household ammonia does not damage soil structure & is a nitrogenous fertiliser. Use with care, & avoid avoid inhaling fumes. WARNING! NEVER mix ammonia with chlorine bleach, or anything containing chlorine – it will give off a toxic gas, and may permanently damage your lungs!
